You're making a huge mistake if you're skipping sunscreen! This post is about the importance of sunscreen and the 35+ best sunscreens.
Sunscreen is by far the most important word in skin care, it relates to prevention of not only premature aging but of skin cancer as well.
It might not be your preferred skin care product but it should be, it minimizes the damage and deterioration on the skin.
We live in a society of instant gratification, where if we don't see instant results we toss the skin care product aside, sunscreen is a product that will test your patience because you'll see results in years to come.
What is ultraviolet radiation?
Ultraviolet radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is produced by the sun.
Benefits and Risks of UV Rays
Benefits of Moderate UV Exposure
- Vitamin D Production
- Mood and Energy Improvement
Risks of Excess UV Exposure
- Skin Cancer
- Sunburn
- Immune System Damage
- Eye Damage
- Premature Aging
What does UV do to the skin?
UV rays penetrate deep into the dermis damaging collagen fibers, proteins that give the skin its structure, and elastin, a protein that provides elasticity and resilience to tissues and organs.
When elastin starts breaking down, the body produces metalloproteinases which are enzymes that further contribute to collagen breakdown.
In addition to this, when the skins cellular DNA is damage due to UV ray exposure, the body tries to fix the DNA through a process that produces toxic free radicals.
Because the free radicals are unstable they destroy everything in their way, which result in wrinkles, sun spots and skin cancer.
Antioxidants which can be found in foods and skin care products help fight free radicals.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB?
UV stands for "Ultraviolet Radiation" a form of energy that comes from the sun and considered a human carcinogen (a term designated to any substance or radiation that causes cancer) because it damages the skin's cellular DNA.
The sun emits two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) which are not within the visible light spectrum that the human eyes can see.
UVA
The A in UVA stand for aging ray and has a long wavelength, which means it penetrates deep into the skin (specifically the dermis) destroying key substances that give skin its firmness and elasticity.
As a result, it's not only a cancer creator but it plays a major role in aging because it attacks collagen in the dermis.
About 95% of the UV rays that reach earths surface are UVA rays because they are not absorbed by the ozone layer. They cause a tanning effect which sometimes might lead to sunburn and they can penetrate windows and clouds.
There are two types of UVA rays:
- UVA1: is in the 340–400 nm range.
- UVA2: is in the 320–340 nm range.
The wavelength differences are important because specific active ingredients work best either alone or in combination with other active ingredients to protect from both UV lights.
UVB
The B in UVB stand for burning and has a shorter wavelength between 290 nm to 320 nm than the UVA ray, so it penetrates the skin more superficially.
UBV is the main cause of skin cancer, responsible for sunburn and other changes visible in the surface of the skin.
About 5% of the UV rays that reach earths surface are UVB rays because they are mostly absorbed by the ozone layer. They cause sunburn if overexposed, they don't penetrate windows and are filtered by clouds.
UVB rays vastly depend on geographic location, time of day and season being more prevalent in sunny climates.
For instance, UVB rays are strongest between April and October in the northern hemisphere, when there are more daylight hours, with peak intensity between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
It's best to use a sunscreen that contains protection from both UVA and UVB which are labeled "broad spectrum protection," this means it has passed the critical wavelength test to protect from both aging and burning rays.
The chart below shows active sunscreen ingredients with the amount of ray protection each provides and its type.
The FDA has prohibited companies from labeling their products as "sunblock," because no lotion can completely block the sun; hence the term sunscreen because it can only screen out some of the UV rays.
Types of Sunscreen
There are two main types of sunscreen that protect from UV rays:
Physical sunscreen: which is also known as mineral sunscreen, forms a barrier between the sun and your skin to keep rays from penetrating.
Classic mineral sunscreen ingredients are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which have been labeled by the FDA as “safe and effective” because they are not absorbed into the body and by the bloodstream.
Mineral sunscreens are gentle on the skin and work upon application. Many sunscreens, because of technological advances such as nanotechnology, are now formulated to be lightweight, blendable and non-greasy.
Chemical sunscreen: which is also known as synthetic sunscreen, filters radiation by absorbing it and then transforming it into heat energy.
After application, you should give it 15 minutes for it to soak and work effectively because after all it's a chemical process.
Chemical sunscreens are lighter than mineral formulas, so they go on like moisturizers and leave no visible traces.
You can read more about the types of sunscreen, the pros and cons and which type of sunscreen to choose here.
What does SPF mean and how to pick a number?
Melanin is a protective epidermal pigment in the skin that blocks UV rays to prevent DNA damage and potential skin cancer.
Unfortunately, melanocytes take time to produce melanin and when they don't produce enough melanin to create a tan, the skin remains unprotected.
As a result, UV rays from the sun penetrate the skin causing damage which accumulates over time leading to premature aging and skin cancer; the reason we need SPF.
SPF stands for "sun protection factor" which measures the efficiency of sunscreen blocking UVB rays, there are different models that measure SPF.
- Based on time: If it takes 5 minutes of sun exposure for your skin to turn red, putting on SPF 15 will give you approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of sun protection (SPF 15 x 5 minutes = 75 minutes).
- Based on the strength of the formula: SPF 15 blocks 93 to 95 % of UVB rays; SPF 30 blocks 97 % of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks 98 % of UVB rays; and so on.
These models are not perfect but can give you an idea between the differences in SPFs and the level of sun exposure you can be susceptible to.
While UVB damage is noticeable with the skin burning and turning red, UVA causes damage without any signs of sunburn.
It's recommended to use sunscreen labeled as "broad spectrum protection" because they provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
The FDA created stricter regulations on SPF value labeling because there's a plateau in the amount of sun protection you can get. As a result, companies now must label anything over SPF 50 as 50+.
However, as of February 21st 2019, the FDA has proposed to raise the maximum proposed SPF value on sunscreen labels from SPF 50+ to SPF 60+ because sunscreens with SPF values above 60 lack data showing meaningful clinical benefits.
Am I good to go all day If I'm wearing waterproof SPF 50+?
The FDA, has prohibited companies to market products with words like "waterproof", "sweat-proof" and "sunblock" because they're misleading.
Instead, they have been allowed sunscreens to be labeled as "water resistant", if tested according to the required SPF test procedure.
Water resistant SPF test procedure consists of how effective sunscreen is for 40 minutes or 80 minutes when swimming or sweating and providing directions on when to reapply.
It's recommended to reapply your sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours (even if it's water resistant), if you're sweating reapply more often and if swimming reapply every time you come out of the water.
If I combine my SPF 15 moisturizer with my SPF 30 BB cream, does it equal to SPF 45?
No, your total sun protection will be equivalent to the highest SPF you applied, which is 30 in this case.
However, protection is protection and if you use more products with SPF you'll be experiencing better results.
What does "PA" and the "+" symbol stand for?
PA stands for “Protection Grade of UVA" which is a rating system developed in Japan to determine the amount of UVA protection a product offers.
The plus ("+") sing indicates the level of protection, for instance, the more pluses the higher the level of protection.
- PA+ = Low UVA protection.
- PA++ = Moderate UVA protection.
- PA+++ = High UVA protection.
- PA++++ = Extremely High UVA protection.
Japanese researchers developed the PA system by converting the existing PPD (persistent pigment darkening) rating system, which measures skin-aging UVA rays.
If your product has a PPD of 4, it takes 4 times longer for your skin to tan in comparison as if it was unprotected.
The PA system simplifies and groups the ratings from a PPD test, as a result, the ratings correlate and are as followed:
- PA+ = PPD between 2 and 4
- PA++ = PPD between 4 and 8
- PA+++ = PPD between 8 and 16
- PA++++ = PPD of 16 or higher
Skin is All Genetics
Not entirely, your genes account for only 10 to 20 % of aging while 80 to 90 % of your aging is a result of environmental factors.
A real life example of how environmental factors negatively impact the aging process is truck driver Bill McElligott's who made international news in 2012.
By the age of 69, McElligott had driven a truck for 28 years without wearing sunscreen, leaving the left side of his face exposed to the sun through the driver's side window.
The difference between the left side and right side (which was shielded and less exposed to the sun) of his face was shocking. The left side was wrinkly, saggy, spotty and looked much older than the right.
Do people with darker skin tones need sunscreen?
Yes, people with darker skin toned need to wear sunscreen.
Darker complexions naturally produce more melanin than fair complexions. However, it's not the same level of protection that sunscreen offers to protect against UV rays.
As a result, people with dark complexions burn which cause skin damage such as skin cancer and hyperpigmentation.
Study results presented by The University of Cincinnati (UC) showed that people with darker complexions are more likely to die from skin cancer.

Can I call it a day If I wear SPF 50?
Sunscreen reapplication is key, SPF protection fades so after a few hours it's ineffective.
If you spend your days indoors, you might think that you don't need to wear sunscreen.
However, despite not being exposed to the sun you still need to wear SPF — specially if you're seated near windows or an area with lots of sunlight — because UVA rays penetrate through clouds and windows.
On the other hand, we are also being exposed to high-energy visible (HEV) light through not only the sun but man-made devices as well.
High-energy visible light wavelength is the shortest on the visible light spectrum, hence, it has the highest energy penetrating deep into the skin (the dermis) causing serious damage if one is exposed during long periods of time.
Unfortunately, there's still a lack of research concerning protection against HEV light.
Fortunately, there are ways to minimize HEV light exposure, such as:
- Wearing sunscreens that contain ingredients that block minerals (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) paired with antioxidant serums because mineral blockers reflect light away from the skins surface and antioxidants maintain free radical stabilized.
- Install HEV light filters — or apps — on all your electronic devices to shield the skin and eyes. You can also set the devices to “night mode” because it will reduce the amount of light being emitted.
- Pupils dilate in dim light allowing more light in so avoid using your devices in the dark.
You can read about high-energy visible (HEV) light in more depth here.
I Hate Wearing Sunscreen
With so much improvement and progress in the cosmetic world, there are different sunscreen options to choose from lightweight, non-greasy and non-pasty that will keep your skin looking like porcelain.
If you don't apply sunscreen on a regular basis, I recommend you get sunglasses (with lenses that absorb UVA and UVB 100% and big frames to protect the skin around the eye) and hats (with a decent brim) to protective your skin from the sun.
UPF stands for "Ultraviolet Protection Factor" which is a numerical rating for clothing that indicates how effectively fabric blocks both UVB and UVA rays.
The table illustrates the different ranges of UPF protection and the UV percentages that are blocked.
Protection Category | UPF RANGE | UPF Values Allowed on Labels | Approximate % UV Blocked |
---|---|---|---|
Good UV Protection | 15 - 24 | 15 and 20 | 93.3% - 95.8% |
Very Good UV Protection | 25 - 39 | 25, 30 and 35 | 96.0% - 97.4% |
Excellent UV Protection | 40 - 50+ | 40, 45, 50 and 50+ | 97.5% - 98.0% |
Is SPF makeup enough?
SPF makeup does not offer enough protection, blocking only against UVB rays. Go for products that offer "broad spectrum protection" because it protects from both UBV and UVA rays.
The Skin Cancer Foundation advises using a moisturizer that contains broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15 to receive proper protection.
However, Dr. Talakoub estimates that to receive protection from the SPF rating on the bottle, you'd need to layer the makeup 15 times more than you normally would. Otherwise, it's not worth it because you have to use a lot of sunscreen.
It is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology to reapply SPF 2 hours to make sure you're receiving maximum protection.
When you're wearing makeup, it's not easy to reapply sunscreen, using mineral powder sunscreen or makeup sprays that contain SPF (if applied carefully) are good options.
I need a tan!
A tan is visible sun damage, it happens when your skin protects itself — by producing melanin (the skin's self mechanism) — from the damage of UV rays.
When UV rays come in contact with the skin, it reacts with oxygen in the air causing a chain reaction of free radicals, melanin prevents photochemical formation of free radical.
Free radicals cause oxidative stress which damages DNA, breaks down the skin’s collagen, elastic fibers and lipids.
When skin cells are overexposed to UV rays they stop producing melanin causing depigmentation (white spots).
According to the CDC, melanin protection accounts to putting SPF 3 sunscreen which is not near the recommended amount — of SPF 30 or more so wear sunscreen.
Instead of tanning, if you want to get that glowy caramel bronzed look in a healthy way, these 30+ self tanners will help you achieve just that!
Is it too late to start wearing sunscreen?
You'll reap the benefits from being sun savvy at any age, especially when it comes to protecting yourself from skin cancer!
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for nearly half of cancers in the United States.
You should be extra careful If you have a family history of skin cancer. Watch out for sores that don't heal, moles that change either size or color or spots on your skin that feel tender or painful.
What else should I know about sunscreen?
Sunscreen should be the last step to your skin care routine because applying any other product on top of it will dilute it; here are
Apply sunscreen to your lips, ears, neck, chest, hands and shoulders as these areas are often neglected and exposed to the sun consistently.
After exfoliating or using retinol products, be extra cautious about sun protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chemical and mineral sunscreens protect the skin effectively, however, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, found in mineral formulas, are the only two sunscreen ingredients that are approved by the FDA.
This doesn’t mean that chemical sunscreens are dangerous but that the FDA needs more data to make sure the rest of the ingredients meet their safety standards.
If you are concerned about certain ingredients, go for mineral-based natural sunscreens which are chemical-free and reef-safe.
