Honest Tonymoly Lip Mask 2023 Review

This post is a review about the Tonymoly Lip Mask.

Every single one of us is physically different, from our hair to our noses to our lips.

Some of us have big lips and some have small ones, I fall into the small lips category and when I was younger it was a concern of mine.

I wanted fuller, rounder and plumper lips and in my attempt to try and make my lips naturally fuller, I tried everything from natural at home recipes, lipsticks, lip glosses and lip masks.

I searched every corner of the internet and decided to try the Tonymoly Lip Mask because hydrated lips give the appearance of big and plumper lips; and it's one of the best alternatives to lip injections.

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is a berry flavored jelly lip mask that delivers intense moisture and nourishment to dry and chapped lips.

It contains collagen to restore elasticity and witch hazel extract to soothe and moisturize the lips, leaving them very hydrated and soft.

First Impression

Tonymoly is a very popular cosmetic brand from South Korea, the name means "putting style into packaging" which is fitting because all of their packagings are cute and creative.

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is no exception, its cute pink packaging is what actually drew me to buy this lip mask in the first place.

It's a thin pink transparent jelly lip patch, that comes in a plastic mold surrounded with liquid so it's stays moist.

It has to be opened gently, otherwise, the lip mask can be torn apart easily. 

The packaging is very small making it travel-friendly and perfect for those who are constantly traveling.

The Benefits

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is extremely gentle on the lips because of its gel like consistency and has a very subtle berries fragrance which is pleasant.

This lip mask hydrates the lips and it's all thanks to its ingredients:

Glycerin

• Refreshes the skin's surface by increasing skin hydration and retaining moisture.

Chondrus Crispsus (Carrageenan)

• Helps hydrate the skin.
• Protects the skin from blue light exposure, environmental stressors and damaging pollutants.

Butylene Glycol

• Provides the skin with a smooth and moisturizing texture.

Agar

• Helps the skin retain moisture.

Fragaria Chiloensis (Strawberry) Fruit Extract

• Hydrates and soothes the skin.
• Helps the skin withstand environmental damage.

Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract

• It has antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits.

Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract

In addition to this, it's easy to apply, it fits lips of different sizes and shapes and it's great as a pre-lipstick or pre-lipgloss treatment.

My Experience With The Tonymoly Lip Mask

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is a lip mask that intensely hydrates the lips, so I was very excited to try it out.

As someone who has dry lips, when I applied this lip mask over my lips, it felt very soothing which was great because having dry and/or chapped lips can be unappealing and painful. 

I loved the fact that the lip mask was drenched in serum, however, this caused it to be slippery and hard to keep in place.

I found myself constantly adjusting the lip mask so that it wouldn't fall off. 

The subtle berries fragrance could be an issue to  those who are sensitive to smells, but I personally found it very pleasing. 

After using it, my lips felt hydrated, smooth and soft but I would've liked the results to last much longer.

The Disadvantages

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is a good lip mask but just like any skin care product, you want to watch out some of the ingredients.

This lip mask contains Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract which has tannins that are sensitizing and when applied to the skin has constricting and drying effect.

Witch hazel is distilled with denatured alcohol (ethanol) which causes free-radical damage and impairs the skin’s surface.

It also naturally contains volatile oil which comes from the potent fragrant sensitizer eugenol that leads to visible skin problems.

Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract is another ingredient found in this lip mask, Paula's Choice gave it an average rating. However, I was unable to find enough reliable information to know whether this ingredient is safe or not. 

It also contains methylparaben which prevents harmful bacteria and mold from growing, therefore, increasing the shelf life of a product.

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety and U.S. Food and Drug Administration assure parabens are safe to use in cosmetics. 

However, parabens have been controversial ingredients since 2004 due to insufficient data and the debate still continues as to whether parabens are safe or not.

This lip mask has Ci 16185 which is a red azo dye that was once used to dye food and color cosmetics. However, it has been banned in the United States since 1976 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because it is a suspected carcinogen.

Another ingredient of concern is benzophenone-4 which causes cancer, endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, skin and eye irritation and increases the ability of harmful chemicals to penetrate the skin in concentrations higher than 10%.

Last but not least, it has flavor which according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is any natural or synthetic substance or substances is used to impart taste.

The lip mask is very slippery and needs to be adjusted constantly; avoid opening your mouth while using the lip mask.  

My lips did feel hydrated, smooth and soft but not plumped and the results are temporary; fading almost instantly.

Also, it's expensive for a single use lip patch. 

Why Should You Use The Tonymoly Lip Mask?

You should use the Tonymoly Lip Mask because it’s very gentle and soothing on the lips and one of the fastest and quickest ways to hydrate your lips.

When Should You Use The Tonymoly Lip Mask?

You should use the Tonymoly Lip Mask when you need to hydrate your dry and/or chapped lips.

How Should You Use The Tonymoly Lip Mask?

Exfoliate your lips gently to remove the dead skin. Don't over exfoliate, otherwise, you can end up with even more dry and chapped lips.

After cleansing and toning, tear open the package and apply the jelly mask over your lips and wait about 15 to 20 minutes.

Then remove the lip mask and massage the remaining essence until your lips have fully absorbed the essence. 

TIPS

• For a more soothing effect, keep the lip mask in the fridge.

Precautions Before Using The Tonymoly Lip Mask

Precautions to take into consideration before using the Tonymoly Lip Mask are:

• Stop using if the skin becomes red, itchy, irritated or inflamed or swollen.
• Discontinue use if signs of irritation or allergies appear.
• Avoid using on irritated or troubled skin.
• Patch testing is recommended.

Final Thoughts

The Tonymoly Lip Mask is definitely cute and fun but when it comes to hydrating the lips, it's average.

It's drenched with serum and its gel like consistency makes it very soothing on the lips but it's very slippery and needs to be adjusted frequently.

For a single use treatment, it's expensive and the results are very short-lived; hydrated, smooth and soft lips fade almost instantly.

As someone who has dry lips, I prefer a much stronger lip product such as a lip balm or sleeping mask. 

This lip mask is not an alternative to lip injections, but it's very soothing on the lips and a lot of fun to use; it's up to you if you want to try it out!
